Experience the grandeur of Denmark’s royal heritage on this 6-8 hour guided tour, exploring some of the country’s most magnificent castles. The journey takes you through

  • Kronborg Castle, a historic fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site;
  • Frederiksborg Castle, a Renaissance masterpiece;
  • and Fredensborg Palace, the Danish royal family’s seasonal residence.

Kronborg Castle, located in Helsingør, is one of Northern Europe’s most significant Renaissance castles. Built in the 16th century, it played a crucial role in maritime history, controlling passage through the Øresund Strait. The castle is internationally recognized as the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and offers visitors an impressive insight into Denmark’s past. Inside, the grand ballroom, once the largest in Northern Europe, showcases magnificent architecture, while the Royal Apartments provide a glimpse into the opulence of Renaissance-era interiors. Visitors can also explore the underground casemates, where the legendary Danish hero Holger Danske is said to rest. The castle’s location offers breathtaking panoramic views of Sweden across the strait.

Frederiksborg Castle, situated in Hillerød, is the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia and a striking example of early 17th-century Danish architecture. Built by King Christian IV, it is home to the Museum of National History, which houses an extensive collection of royal portraits, historical paintings, and artifacts. The castle’s chapel was once used for royal coronations, adding to its historical significance. The Great Hall, adorned with golden ceilings and grand chandeliers, reflects the splendor of the Danish monarchy. Surrounding the castle, the beautifully designed baroque gardens create a serene and picturesque setting, featuring symmetrical pathways, sculpted hedges, and ornamental water features.

Fredensborg Palace, built in 1720, serves as the Danish royal family’s spring and autumn residence. Nestled beside Lake Esrum, the palace is known for its elegant baroque architecture and meticulously landscaped gardens. While the palace itself is not open to the public, visitors can explore its beautifully designed grounds, including the grand Parterre Garden and the surrounding parkland. Often used for state visits and royal celebrations, the palace holds a special place in Denmark’s modern monarchy.
