Kronborg Castle is one of the most famous castles in Denmark and a symbol of the city of Helsingør. Built in the 15th century, it gained international recognition as the setting for Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet.
Located near Helsingør on the northwestern tip of the island of Zealand, Kronborg Castle overlooks the narrowest part of the Øresund Strait, where Denmark and Sweden are separated by just 4 kilometers. This strategic position gave the castle immense military and economic importance for several centuries.
Today, Kronborg is best known as the legendary home of two Danish figures: Prince Hamlet and Holger Danske (Ogier the Dane). According to legend, Holger sleeps in the castle’s underground casemates and will awaken when Denmark is in danger, rising to defend his homeland from enemies.
The Castle is located about 45 min. from Copenhagen by car or train.
