An icebreaker tour in Lapland is an unforgettable experience that allows you to enjoy the northern landscapes and feel the power of this impressive vessel. Lapland located in Northern Europe, is known for its unique nature and ice sheets. During an icebreaker tour, you will be able to soak up the amazing views around you.
During an icebreaker tour, you will learn about the work and features of the vessel, participate in its navigation and enjoy the wonderful panorama of the icy landscape. Experienced guides will tell you about the flora and fauna of this unique region and you will be able to see ice mountains, various species of animals and maybe even the northern lights if the weather is favorable.
An icebreaker is a unique vessel. Unlike other vessels, an icebreaker has a specially designed reinforced hull that can withstand the pressure of the ice, an ice drift shape that allows it to cut a channel in the frozen waters, and enormous power that allows it to push through the sea ice.
The Polar Explorer icebreaker was built in 1976 in Germany as an ice-class anchoring, tug and supply vessel. The vessel is used to tow large barges around the world from Norway to Brazil. It also anchors oil rigs in the Arctic Ocean and delivers supplies such as water and food to the oil rig crews.
The Polar Explorer is 78 meters long, 14 meters wide and 22 meters high with 7 decks. It can navigate in water at least 5 meters deep. During our stop at sea, the depth is approximately 10-15 meters. Here you can swim in buoyant survival suits. You can also watch the ship begin to break the ice as soon as it leaves the dock.
Our tour includes 7 stations. You can see signs indicating the direction to the stations throughout the ship. You do not have to follow the stations in numerical order. You can visit any station during the cruise. You will be free to enter any areas of the icebreaker, except for those with signs “for crew only”. During the cruise, we will have a stop for about one hour. During this time, you will be able to swim in a survival suit in the icy sea water. It is completely safe and does not require swimming skills.
