The Golden Circle of Iceland includes three equally stunning sites in the southwest of the country:
- Þingvellir National Park,
- the Geysir geothermal area,
- Gullfoss waterfall.
This route is considered one of the most popular and iconic ways to explore Iceland’s nature and history.
Þingvellir National Park is a unique place that combines historical and geological significance. It was here, in the year 930, that the Icelandic parliament Althing was established—one of the oldest in the world. The park lies in a rift valley between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, making it especially fascinating for geology enthusiasts. Þingvellir was the first national park in Iceland and remains the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the country.
The Geysir geothermal area, the second stop on the route, is located in the Haukadalur Valley. Here, you can observe bubbling hot springs and erupting geysers. While the Great Geysir, which gave its name to all geysers worldwide, rarely erupts today, its neighbor Strokkur reliably shoots jets of boiling water up to 20–30 meters high every few minutes.
Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall”, concludes the route. It is one of Iceland’s most powerful and beautiful waterfalls, where the waters of the Hvítá river plunge into a deep canyon, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle. The route gets its name—Golden Circle—from this very waterfall.
The tour lasts about 8 hours and includes a comfortable transfer and a guide who will tell you about the culture, nature and history of Iceland.
