Akershus Fortress has been a reliable defender of Oslo since the days when the entire city fit under the Ekeberg hill. Today it is one of the most recognizable symbols of the capital. Although Akershus Fortress is still a military zone, it is open to the public. The Norwegian Ministry of Defense and the Norwegian Defense Headquarters share a modern headquarters in the eastern part of the fortress.
The guard of His Majesty the King is responsible for the protection of the fortress, with stationary guard posts during working hours and mobile patrols at night. One of the stationary guard posts at the entrance is a popular photo spot for tourists visiting the fortress.
The Royal Mausoleum at the castle is the final resting place of a number of Norwegian royals. These include King Sigurd I, King Haakon V, Queen Euphemia, King Haakon VII, Queen Maud, King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha.
Since the restoration of the main building, the castle has often been used as a venue for official events and dinners for dignitaries and foreign heads of state.
Our tour will begin from the Town Hall Square, right in the middle between the past (fortress) and modern Oslo (Aker Brygge).
Aker Brygge is famous for its chain of restaurants along the promenade, which we will definitely take a stroll along, admiring the view of the Oslofjord. We, like time travelers, will glide through the centuries and history of the city.
